UNIT 7: WORLD POPULATION
Lesson C: Listening

I. OBJECTIVES:
1. Knowledge: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
  • Use lexical items related to the world population
  • Describe the reasons, problems, and solutions to overpopulation
  • Listen to the monologue, and guess the content of the text to do the tasks.
  • Have an overlook about reasons, problems, and solutions of overpopulation
  • Choose suitable activities/solutions to solve problems of overpopulation
  • Practice pronunciation of keywords in the lesson:
  • Particularly (adv)    [pəʳtɪkjʊləʳli]
  • developing countries (n) [dɪveləpɪŋ 'kʌntrɪ]
  • Punishment (n)  ['pʌnɪʃmənt]:

2. Skills: By the end of this unit, students can:
  • Respond briefly to give their opinions on the listening text they are going to do
  • Develop students' skills in listening for specific information and listening for grid
  • Pronounce new words correctly to listen more effectively
  • Wrap up the listening lesson with an expansion to speaking using the knowledge and information students have just learned.
3. Educational aims:  By the end of this unit, students can:
  • Raise  awareness of overpopulation
  • Build up their confidence in their listening capability.
II. PROCEDURES:
        1. Check-up: (5 minutes): Students talk about the reasons and problems of overpopulation.
        2. New lesson: (35 minutes)

II/ PREPARATIONS:
Time ACTIVITY 1 WARM-UP:
(5’) Solve the jigsaw puzzle
Eliciting Questions:
  1. What continent has the largest population?
  2. Which country has the  largest population?
  3. Which country has the  largest population in southeast asia?

 
Aim: The purpose of the task is to engage Ss in the lesson by eliciting their knowledge about overpopulation
Content
  • Ss aware of overpopulation
  • Ss give the name of the continent that has the largest population
  • Ss make a list of countries that have a large population
Outcome:
Solve the jigsaw puzzle à a chart about population
  1. Asia is a continent with the largest population
  2. China
  3. Indonesia
Organization: 
Ss work in pairs, discuss and answer the questions
Time ACTIVITY 2 Listen for gist
10’ Question:
  1. What is the main idea of the monologue?
  2. What issues are discussed in the monologue?

 
Aim: The purpose of the task is to
  • Active the prior knowledge of students (Speaking lesson)
  • Give Ss a closer look into what they are going to listen to.
Content
  • Ss  work  in  groups  and  state reasons, problems and solutions to overpopulation
  • Teacher has Ss repeat some key words after Teacher.

  • Review the speaking lesson and make predictions about the listening text.
  • Ss may respond briefly to give their opinions on the listening they are going to do.
Outcome
  • The listening text may be about overpopulation. 
  • I think the listening text may tell us about reasons, problems, and solutions to overpopulation
Organization: 
  • The teacher introduce vocabulary relatingto the monologue
  • The teacher plays the tape. 
  • Ss listen one more time if necessary to build up their confidence in their listening capability.
Time ACTIVITY 3 PRACTICE 1
7’ Listen again and choose  the best answer A, B, C, or D for the following statements and questions

 
Aim: The purpose of the task is to check Ss’ comprehension.
Content:  
  • Ss work individually to do the task
  • Then, Ss work in pairs to compare their answers
Outcome: 
  1. A - over 6.7 billion  
  2. D - about 76 million
  3. C - Latin America
  4. D - a decrease in death rates
  5. A - literacy
  6. C -Advising people to use birth control methods.
Organization: 
  • Ss read the statements carefully, and guess what options may be the answer.
  • The teacher plays the recording and asks Ss to listen and underline information in each statement. 
  • Ss in pairs compare their answers and give reasons for their choice
  • The teacher plays the tape again little by little
  • Ss listen and check
  • The teacher gives the correct answers and explains them.
Time ACTIVITY 4 PRACTICE 2
7’ Listen again and fill in the missing word in the gaps

Aim: The purpose of the task is to check Ss’ comprehension.
Content:  
  • Ss work individually to do the task
  • Then, Ss work in pairs to compare their answers

  • The teacher gives the correct answers and explains them.
Time ACTIVITY 5 APPLICATION
6’ Complete the chart about overpopulation
Write the report about overpopulation
(Appendix- task 3)

 
Aim: The purpose of the task is to develop Ss’ skills in listening for detailed information.
Content: 
  • The main reason for the population explosion is the death rates due to the fall in living conditions and medical care.
  • Problems mentioned by Dr. Brown.
                        a. shortage of food               
b. lack of hospitals and schools
c. illiteracy
                        d. low living standards
  • The solution to those problems.
                        a. educate and make people aware of the danger of having more children.
                        b. provide birth-control methods.
                        c. implement a family planning policy.    
                        d.  exercise strict and fair reward and  
punishment policies.
Organization: 
  • Review task 1,2
  • Ss write the sentences to describe the table they have complete in task 4.
  • The teacher gives positive feedback
  1. Consolidation (4 minutes):
  • Ask Ss to consolidate the main contents.
  • Give feedback.
  • Summarize the main points of the lesson through the presentation of the chart about overpopulation
6. Homework (1 minute):
  • Students review vocabulary related to population
  • Students write a report about overpopulation, basing on information from the lesson
