UNIT 6: GLOBAL WARMING
GETTING STARTED

I. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON
1. Knowledge
By the end of the lesson, students  will be able to:
- Understand and use words and phrases related to global warming, the causes, the effects and the solutions.
- Identify perfect gurunds and perfect participles structures.
- Listen and read for general ideas and specific information about global warming.

2. Competencies

- Read the dialogue to improve pronunciation, vocabulary relating to the topic.
- Use scanning skills to read for specific information.
- Use appropriate in communication to express ideas, feelings in pair word and group work activities.
3. Qualities
- Students have a serious learning attitude; love learning English, energetically and actively participate in learning activities.
- Students raise their awareness of global warming issue since then they can develop the qualities such as caring, protecting, inspriring …

II. Teaching aids and learning materials

- Teacher: textbook, laptop, PowerPoint file, videos, visual aids, lesson plan.
- Students: textbook, notebook, pen/ pencil.
III. TEACHING PROCESS.
ACTIVITY 1: WARM- UP (8 MINUTES)
- Objectives: to introduce the outline of the lesson, engage students and lead in new lesson.
- Outcomes: Students know what global warming is and causes of global warming.
Teacher’s activities Content of the lesson
- Greets students
- Lets students watch a short video, play a dragging and dropping game about global warming. Remind students to take notes about what are mentioned in the video and guess the topic of the lesson.
- Lead in new lesson
- Showing students the outline and the aims of the lesson.
Lead – in questions:
1. What are mentioned in the video?
Expected answers:
Green house gas, Factories, Deforestation
Carbon dioxide, Polar ice melting
2. What is the topic of the lesson? Type the answer on the box.
Expected answer:
“GLOBAL WARMING”

ACTIVITY 2: VOCABULARY (15 MINUTES)
- Objectives: To Improve students’ pronunciation and provide them with more vocabulary related to the topic.
- Outcomes:  Students know know more words and phrases about global warming and express their ideas of using the these words.
Teacher’s and students’ activities Content of the lesson
- Lets students watch a cartoon and ask them to listen and read.
- Provides students new words and phrases in the conversation. Students click to hear and note down.


- Asks students to choose a character to practice the conversation. There are 2 characters: Minh or Lan for students to choose.
The characters are set up automatically, students just pick one character and take turns to practice the dialogue.
- After the conversation, students check their vocabulary by completing the pick- one exercise. Students are allowed to retry until they get the right answers. They can only move to the next slice when all the sentences are correct. Each word/ pharses is chosen once only.

6. Carbon footprint

ACTIVITY 3: PRACTICE (10 MINUTES)
Objectives: To make Ss clear about the topic.
Outcomes: Students can finish the task quickly and correctly without the language barrier.
Teacher’s and students’ activities Content of the lesson
- Teacher gives instruction before letting students do the exercises.
- Students are going to do 2 exercises:
+ Exercise 1: Read the conversation again and decide the statements are true or false. For each correct answer, students get one point at the first try. For the next sencond try, students just do till all the answers go right, without points, to move to the next slice.
+ Exercise 2: Students check the conversation and find out the structure of: perfect participles and past participle. Teacher reminds students to be careful while type “,” and “.” Copy the same as the conversation and must have “.” at the end of the sentence. Points are marked at the first try only.

Keys for exercise 2:
1. Having planned the content, we’re now looking for supporting information.
2. In the past, a lot of industries denied having contributed to global warming, but nowadays most people admit we are all responsible.
3. Having treated the environment irresponsibly, humans now have to suffer the effects of global warming.

ACTIVITY 4: FURTHER PRACTICE (7 MINUTES)
- Objectives: To make sure that students understand the lesson clearly and correctly.
- Outcomes: Students are able to use what they have learnt and their background knowledge to make their own mindmaps about global warming.
Teacher’s and students’ activities Content of the lesson
- Teacher asks students to drag and drop the words/ phrases into the right boxes, the causes, the effects and the sollutions.
- For each correct answer at the first try, students get one point. If the drop is correct, it turns to green, of it is wrong, it turns red.
- The total point of the the lesson is calculated by adding the points in exercise 1 and 2 in practice part and exercise 3 in further practice part.
- If the total points is from 18 points up (60%), students pass, if the total points is below 18 points, they fail and are encouraged to try again.

IV. CONSOLIDATION AND HOMEWORK (5 MINUTES)
- Students answer the questions: “Are you interested in the topic of the lesson?” (Yes or No)
 And “What have you learnt in the lesson today?” by writing a paragraph and submit to teacher.
